Shine a Light

What is the Shine a Light program?

The Shine a Light program is a volunteer program that aims to link senior members of the community who want to volunteer their time and skills with organisations and community groups who need those skills and talents to benefit the wider Canberra community. Projects could include: festivals (youth, art, writing), awareness raising (environment, caring, health), community care (group self-help, practical support), and sharing (community gardens, cooperatives). It is funded with assistance from the ACT Government under the Seniors Grants Program.

Southside Community Services via the Community Development Worker is responsible for the management of the the Shine a Light program including: the development of policy, promotion, recruitment of Volunteers, record keeping, database development etc, decision making regarding applications to book out a Volunteer and the ongoing monitoring of assistance;

We are looking for Volunteers – Canberra residents who have knowledge and expertise they are willing to share with other local people who want to develop activities, services or events but may not have the knowledge and/or confidence to do the planning for such an activity or may not have knowledge in a particular area (e.g. business planning, funding application, promotion).

We are also looking for Organisations and individuals in Canberra who want to link up with the Volunteers to help them with specific projects for the benefit of the community.Visit the Shine-A-Light database  to register as a volunteer or organisation  >>

How it works

The Community Development Worker at Southside is responsible for the overall management of the Shine a Light project including promotion and recruitment. Promotion is done through local: papers, notice boards, service groups etc.

An personal information about Volunteers is kept confidential and the Community Development worker will try to match volunteers to requests from the organisations in need of assistance.

Volunteers are encouraged to keep the Community Development Worker updated on their experience.

To be eligible for Shine a Light, projects must:

  • Be located in the ACT
  • Be not for profit
  • Be non discriminatory
  • Be environmentally sustainable
  • Not contravene any regulation or infringe any laws
  • Be of benefit (socially, economically or environmentally) to the broader local ACT community
