Narrabundah Children’s Cottage is a 35-place long-day-care centre located in the inner south of Canberra. The centre caters for children aged from 6 weeks to 6 years. It is open from 7.45 am to 6.00 pm.
The centre operates for 50 weeks of the year. This unique centre offers a homely atmosphere for your child’s learning and development.

We attempt to provide for your child’s complete needs when they are with us.

Meals including morning and afternoon tea are prepared each day at the cottage by a qualified cook. These meals provide 50% of the recommended daily intake of all nutrients.

The Centre also provides a disposable nappy service. There is no additional cost if you wish to use this service.

The Centre has three rooms offering individualised programs for each age group. Specialised music and movement programs are offered to all age groups.

Babies

Babies  6 weeks - 24 months

In our Babies room, which is known as the Pumpkin Room, we follow each child’s individual routine or needs during the time they are in our care.

Our pattern of the day or daily routine includes meal times, nappy change times, non-directive play and planned experiences.

Our daily routine is flexible according to individual children’s needs each day.

Our Playroom area is made up of two rooms. The main room provides space for a variety of play experiences including crawling, rolling, toddling and tummy time.

Our second play area provides an area for playful self-observation with a low wall mirror for the children to access.

During the course of the day carers note observations of individual children at play. These observations are used to plan future play experiences and to keep a developmental portfolio of each child for parents. At the Cottage we have an open door policy, which encourages you the parents to come and spend time with your child during the day. Breastfeeding mothers are also welcome to continue feeding once care has commenced.

Toddlers

In our toddlers room, known as the Bilby Room our routine or pattern of the day is focused around a summer or winter routine depending on the weather. The Playroom is set in an open plan environment with added opportunity for outdoor experiences on our small verandah area.

A variety of learning centres are planned in this setting with manipulative puzzles; dramatic play; book corner; construction areas  and sand and water experiences on the verandah.

Our program is designed to encourage all children to learn, explore and thrive according to their individual developmental needs and interests. Ensuring that your child enjoys the daily program in the Bilby room is most important.

Observations of each child’s interests and play are recorded and discussed with parents. We use the observations and goals as discussed with the parents to plan for the children’s future learning experiences. These are planned to be stimulating, challenging and developmentally appropriate.

Many children will also be learning to use the toilet in the Bilby room, once again we will work with parents in achieving this milestone both at home and at the Cottage.

Preschool

Our preschool room is known as the Jumbuck Room and caters for 16 children each day.  Our daily routine includes a combination of play experiences both indoors and outdoors.  We also include large and small group times, which include music, stories, show and tell, games and topics of interest initiated by the children.

We have created some wonderful learning areas for the children to explore and learn from in the Jumbuck room.  This program focus is based upon the “Learning Centre” approach to programming, whereby the room is sectioned into centres such as Math; Science; Literacy; Language; Manipulative; Block Construction; Creative Arts and Reading.  We also use the “Emergent Curriculum” approach in the Jumbuck room; therefore the children’s interest will be followed and extended within the program.

Developmental portfolios are maintained for all children, including observations of their play, long and short-term goals set by parents and staff.  We use the observations and goals set for each child to plan appropriate experiences, which encourage and extend each child’s developmental areas.  Our program promotes self-esteem and independence within a nurturing environment.

Children are also encouraged to share their home language and culture, which adds understanding, awareness and acceptance of the culturally diverse society we live in.
