Fyshwick Early Childhood Centre is a 45 place long day care centre located amongst the pine trees of Fyshwick.  The centre caters for children from 6 weeks to 6 years of age.

The centre is open from 7.30am – 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Fyshwick currently has the highest rating for Accreditation standards, priding itself on promoting quality care for the community.

We have an open door policy inviting parents and carers to come and be involved in part of their child’s day.  Whether it is to join your child for lunch, or to be involved during the daily activities, parents and carers are more than welcome to stay for a while.

The centre provides meals with 50% of the daily nutritional requirements.  Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided on a 6 week rotating menu, ensuring a wide variety of foods.

The centre also provides a nappy service at no extra charge.

Fyshwick has 3 rooms; a babies room, toddler room and a preschool room, with each room providing a program that caters for the group as well as each individual child’s needs.

Babies Room

Our babies room provides a warm and vibrant environment for infants to learn and develop at their pace. There is a basic daily routine encompassing things such as meals, nappy change routines, and outside play. Individual children’s routines are developed in consultation with parents and caregivers.

We have an open door policy at the centre.  This policy encourages mothers who are breastfeeding to continue once their child has started care.

Our staff establish strong relationships with families, incorporating each child’s own needs, cultures and abilities into their daily routines. Staff understand that in this age group human interaction is the most important tool to learning and development.  The weekly program is established through individual observations of each child, in conjunction with a strong knowledge of early childhood development and group dynamics.

Staff read stories, sing songs, play with puppets, play peek-a-boo games and provide a range of experiences that create fun, anticipation and surprise. Staff encourage babies to develop problem solving skills and simple self help skills.

Toddler Room

The staff in the toddler room work in consultation with parents, to develop a routine appropriate for each individual child. When a child is ready to begin toileting staff and parents will work together to assist the child with this transition. Staff will also consult with families regarding things such as rest time and meals.

The program in the toddler room incorporates a variety of experiences that aim to facilitate imaginative activities, curiosity and thinking, imitation and prediction, and expenditure of a lot of energy.  Staff interactions with the children enhance all aspects of the program, as the staff verbally and non-verbally challenge the children in their play.

The children’s imagination is encouraged through the provision of open-ended, creative experiences, e.g. painting, drawing, collage, music, dancing, drama, dressing up, story telling and play dough.

Gross motor development is encouraged through both indoor and outdoor programs.  These include obstacle courses, bikes, scooters, climbing, sliding, crawling, jumping and circle games.

Preschool Room

Our Preschool room encourages independence and offers many opportunities for the children to do things for themselves. While adult help is always there we believe in encouraging the children to try for themselves first.

The daily routine consists of a variety of planned play experiences, and less formal ‘free play’ experiences.  The planned play experiences consist of a variety of fine motor, art/craft, maths, science and language activities.  Throughout the day the children are also involved in language/maths and music groups.

Our preschool staff work with parents and caregivers to develop goals for each individual child. The staff develop a room program based on these goals, individual child observations, skills and needs, and a solid working knowledge of appropriate developmental milestones for this age group. School readiness is also focused on in the preschool program.
